Before you call for furnace repair, run through this list. About a third of "furnace not heating" tickets turn out to be one of these — and your fix may only cost a filter or a tripped breaker.

  1. Confirm the thermostat is set to HEAT, not COOL or OFF. Raise the setpoint 5 degrees above the current room temperature so the furnace actually calls for heat. Make sure the fan switch is set to AUTO, not ON (running the fan continuously will blow cold air until the burners actually fire).
  2. Replace the furnace filter if it's been more than 90 days. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of a furnace that runs the blower but never gets the house warm. Pop the return grille, note the size on the existing filter (16x25x1, 20x20x1, etc.), and swap in a fresh pleated filter. If the furnace has been short-cycling, reset it once by flipping the indoor blower breaker OFF for 30 seconds, then back ON.
  3. Check the gas valve is open and the line has pressure. The metal handle on the gas valve near the furnace runs parallel to the pipe when OPEN and perpendicular when CLOSED. If your gas company was out recently for non-payment or a leak, the valve may be shut off. If you smell gas at any point, stop, leave the home, and call your gas utility's emergency line — do not flip switches.
  4. Clear the area around the furnace and the intake/exhaust vents. The furnace needs at least 30 inches of clearance in front, and the intake and exhaust PVC pipes on a high-efficiency unit need to be clear of snow, leaves, and nests.   5. Listen and watch the sequence when you turn the thermostat up. A working ignition sequence goes: inducer motor starts → 30–60 second purge → igniter glows (or pilot lights) → burners fire → blower kicks in after 1–2 minutes.
