DIY Checklist

Safe DIY Checks You Can Do in Under 10 Minutes

Before you call for AC repair, run through this list. About a third of "AC not cooling" tickets turn out to be one of these — and your fix may only cost a filter or a tripped breaker.

  1. Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL, not HEAT or OFF. Drop the setpoint 5 degrees below the current room temperature so the system actually calls for cooling. Make sure the fan switch is set to AUTO, not ON (running the fan continuously can mask a cooling problem by recirculating warm air).
  2. Replace the air filter if it's been more than 60 days. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of an AC that runs but doesn't cool. Pop the return grille, note the size on the existing filter (16x25x1, 20x20x1, etc.), and swap in a fresh pleated filter. If the indoor coil is already iced over, run the fan only (not COOL) for 2–3 hours to let it thaw before restarting.
  3. Confirm the outdoor unit has power. Open the disconnect box next to the outdoor condenser (the metal box on the wall near the unit) — you may find a tripped breaker or pulled fuse inside. If the condensate safety switch has tripped, the indoor unit will shut down while the outdoor unit keeps trying to run.
  4. Clear debris and vegetation around the outdoor condenser. The unit needs at least 12–24 inches of clearance on all sides to dump heat. Trim any shrubs, rake leaves, and rinse the fins gently with a garden hose from the inside out (never use a pressure washer — it'll bend the fins).
  5. Listen at the outdoor unit. When you turn the thermostat up, you should hear the compressor start within a few seconds. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent, you've lost the signal to the compressor — most often a tripped breaker, a bad capacitor, or a control-board issue. Do not open the outdoor unit's panel — exposed capacitors hold a dangerous charge even with the power off.
  6. Look for ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines. Shine a flashlight at the evaporator coil (usually above the furnace or inside the air handler). A frosty coil and a sweating suction line means low airflow or low refrigerant — keep the system OFF and call a pro before the compressor is damaged.
  7. Check the breaker panel. A double-pole 30A or 40A breaker in your main panel may have tripped. Flip it fully OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again immediately, do not reset it again — there's a hard electrical fault a pro needs to diagnose.

Warm air after a fresh filter swap

If a brand-new filter didn't restore cooling and the system is still blowing room-temperature air, the problem is downstream of airflow — usually low refrigerant or a failing compressor.

Hissing, bubbling, or gurgling sounds

A hiss or bubble near the indoor unit or outdoor condenser means refrigerant is escaping the sealed system. The system has to be leak-tested, repaired, and recharged by an EPA-certified tech.

Coil still iced after 3+ hours of fan-only

If the indoor coil won't thaw with the fan running, the underlying cause isn't airflow — it's low refrigerant from a leak, and the compressor is at risk of hydraulic damage every minute it tries to start.

Breaker tripping repeatedly

One tripped breaker is normal; two in the same day is a short, ground fault, or locked compressor. Resetting a tripping breaker is a fire risk — leave it OFF and call for AC repair.

Sweet or chemical smell from the vents

A sweet, ether-like smell is refrigerant leaking into the airstream. Shut the system down, ventilate the home, and call a pro — refrigerant exposure is a health hazard and the leak needs to be sealed.

System is 15+ years old
